JoinFS Ubuntu 17.10 (Wine)
JoinFS Ubuntu 17.10 (Wine)
Good day, Peter.
And first of all, thank you for you'r effort to Flight Simulation.
JoinFS has been the missing key of virtual aviation.
i had quite alot of trouble with Wine in Ubuntu 17.10, before getting it running.
However, now that the trouble seems to be solved with Wine.
When i launch JoinFS via Wine. The Screen popping up, stays dark. i am able to see the header JoinFS.
But the rest of the screen stays dark.
On my older office computer with Ubuntu 14.04 and a very old version of Wine the program works outa the box.
However, this doesnt help much as the machine is barely capable of running a chess game (hihi)
As mentioned, the X-Plane 11 Computer is on Ubuntu 17.10 and Wine 3.0
Thank you once again for you'r time Peter
Regards: Christian

Re: JoinFS Ubuntu 17.10 (Wine)
Hi Christian,
does JoinFS respond at all? Does the machine have a working link to the internet?

Re: JoinFS Ubuntu 17.10 (Wine)
Hello again Peter, and thank you for your answer.
It seems like JoinFS Freezes in Wine at the moment.
The Computer does have a working internet Connection.
I got it Wrong in the first message, the actual version of Wine is 3.2 not 3.0
I am able to install via the .msi file. But not run the program.
Is it Possible, to have JoinFS Running on the office machine, and X-Plane on the gaming computer?, as they are on the same Network
Just an idea.

Re: JoinFS Ubuntu 17.10 (Wine)
Yes, it should be possible to connect JoinFS to X-Plane on a different device. I've not tested it, but all you need to do is open the JoinFS Settings and set the 'Address' option in the the X-Plane settings to the LAN IP address of the machine running X-Plane.
Will be interested to hear if that works.

Re: JoinFS Ubuntu 17.10 (Wine)
Tested with JoinFS running on one machine and the simulator on the other
atleast only by assigning the IP addresses i am not able to get it to work, there should be no firewalls etc blocking the connection between the two machines.
This could be a very interesting setup to solve for future purposes.
However, i am wondering what is different between the two cases.
The machine where the program is working, is on Ubuntu 14.04 and Wine 1.6
where the problem is the machine is running Ubuntu 17.10 and Wine 3.2 even tried different versions of Wine.
One idea i had was something similar to problem a few years ago, with the same type of black screen problem.
The issue then was with the (Noveau graphics drivers) But this time, i am running Tested drivers from nvidia.
i am not really sure what to dig in to, as the problem seems to be with wine, rather than JoinFS.
Hopefully it could be solved.
Thank you for you'r time.

Re: JoinFS Ubuntu 17.10 (Wine)
I forgot to mention, as i am not able to run JoinFS on the machine with X-Plane 11
I was neither able to install the X-Plane Plugin to the machine.

Re: JoinFS Ubuntu 17.10 (Wine)
If you manually copy 'JoinFS-XP64.dll' to '<xplane>\Resources\plugins\JoinFS\win.xpl'. That might work.AR1842 wrote: I was neither able to install the X-Plane Plugin to the machine.

Re: JoinFS Ubuntu 17.10 (Wine)
Thank you. I will try that now.
Il Keep you updated.
Hopefully a solution will be found,
as i have a feeling that gaming on Linux, will take place in the more
recent distributions of OS.

Re: JoinFS Ubuntu 17.10 (Wine)
I tried copying both the 32 & 64bit xplane .dll files
separately and together.
but i am not able to get the plugin showing up in the in-game menu.

Re: JoinFS Ubuntu 17.10 (Wine)
I've just updated my Centos server to the latest 1.4.9.
Simconnect DOES need to be installed on a Linux system even if you plan to run no SIM or only Xplane.
This is because JOINFS looks for Simconnect when it starts.
If it's not on the system it gives a system.IO error.
There's a link to the 3 main Simconnect versions below.
http://www.fspassengers.com/download/SimConnect.zip
The Xpack version is the one you need to install.
Don't know if that will help you.
Installing both JoinFS and Simconnect through PlayOnLinux may also be more user friendly when updating JoinFS versions.

Re: JoinFS Ubuntu 17.10 (Wine)
I thought I had fixed that problem in 1.4.9, so that you can now run JoinFS without needing SimConnect?

Re: JoinFS Ubuntu 17.10 (Wine)
TBH this version is the first I tried without Simconnect installed on my linux box.
PlayOnLinux has a debug option which I used when the program wouldn't open and that's how I found the error.
I wouldn't worry Peter, it's not an issue in my eyes.
Linux users just need to install Simconnect too.

Re: JoinFS Ubuntu 17.10 (Wine)
Have you tried installing it with PlayOnLinux?
If you do, you can use the debug option and it will tell you where it's failing.

Re: JoinFS Ubuntu 17.10 (Wine)
Good day,
a short update.
After a fresh install of both Playonlinux and the latest version of JoinFS.
i finally manage to install, and run JOINFS on Ubuntu 17.10
Now there is only one problem, i cant manage to get the Plugin showing up in X-Plane, and therefor JoinFS does not connect to X-Plane.
i tried installing _vcredit64.exe or what it was called.
I will give it a new try this evening.
One NOTAM for Linux users, so you can eliminate confusion. Dont use the standard Playonlinux 32bit Virtual Drive settings

Re: JoinFS Ubuntu 17.10 (Wine)
One other thing i forgot to mention is,
Because i am running X-Plane via Steam.
I am not able to Install the plugin via JOINFS itself.
Because Steam, hides the Simulator files, within its own library.
user/share/.steam/steam/..blablabla its the .steam folder, that causes this problem.
a suggestion for future purposes, would be to be able to Install the plugin, Elsewhere than in the X-Plane folder itself.
So it can be manually copied.
Thanks alot once more Peter.

Re: JoinFS Ubuntu 17.10 (Wine)
Yes, you can simply copy/rename the file JoinFS-XP64.dll or JoinFS-XP32.dll from the JoinFS installation folder.

Re: JoinFS Ubuntu 17.10 (Wine)
Correct me if im wrong, but even if the Plugin for X-Plane is in .dll it is supposed to work simply by copying to the X-plane/Resources/Plugins/ folder?
No separate JoinFS folder needed in X-Plane's Plugin folder?
I did try to copy both the 32bit and 64 bit Plugin separately.
But didnt manage to get them Showing up in the X-Plane Plugin menu.
One thing i noticed when giving vcred... "cant still remember" VCREDIST64.exe.... (not at the right computer now)... Visual Basic 2012 a go, was that it told me the Installation has crashed, because it cant be installed on older than Windows XP SP1 X64.
Maybe i spoke to early, but it is so close now, it has never been closer.
If i am right, i guess the problem of the Plugins not showing up, is with Visual Basic, as advised.
I will give it a new try, tomorrow. When at the right machine.
