You'll understand this better than I do. There's some sort of logical redirection involved; I found a file called UserCfg.opt within which there's a definition of something it calls "InstalledPackagesPath". It's defined as follows:
C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.FlightSimulator_8wekyb3d8bbwe\LocalCache\Packages.
When I set that as my pathname the result was that 63 models were found.
6 of those models are from the additional folder defined in my version 1.4.34 and belong to P3D.

Also, I've now flown along with three FSX users who were on version 1.4.34. Aircraft visibility worked in both directions and substitutes were no problem.
